Keolis Downer wanted to support its drivers by deploying a GPS guidance solution which offered an onboard app including turn-by-turn instructions (visual and audio), and a web interface that drivers can consult ahead of their shift to familiarize themselves with each of the variants.
After a comparative review of available solutions, Keolis downer started a trial with ‘My Bus Driver GPS’. The app was selected as a result of its turnkey solution which requires no configuration and provides daily updates which are 100% automatic via the open-data GTFS and on-time performance information at each stop.
As part of the validation process by the Safety department, this solution was first trialled with 10 tablets for one month in Brookvale.
Considering the great success of the trial and the feedback received from our team, Keolis Downer has already expanded it to 30 tablets. Consideration is also being given to a full deployment across the entire fleet so that both old and new drivers have access to the GPS guidance solution which would reduce human error and help to lift on-time performance scores and achieve contractual KPIs. Transport for New South Wales, the PTA, displayed great interest in this solution and was keen to see it expanded.
By reducing the stress and simplifying the fulfilment of these accessory tasks, we expect to reduce the number of accidents and improve the work experience of our employees. In addition, this will allow to improve punctuality for our customers and reduce drastically our usage of paper.
The solution can be deployed in less than 2 weeks for any network with a GTFS which is a standard in the public transport sector and normally available on open data.
