The City of Gold Coast (City) and Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) undertook a 12-month trial of an Autonomous Vehicle (AV) shuttle service in Main Beach, Gold Coast. The EasyMile EZ10 Gen 2 electric AV was provided by RACQ and used for the shuttle service. The purpose of the project, Gold Coast Smart Shuttle trial, was to identify key learnings in relation to the co-existence of AVs with road users and prepare for a future transport ecosystem that embraces technology.

The project was driven by the Gold Coast City Transport Strategy 2031, which highlights reducing car dependency and enhancing public transport options. Recognising the transformative potential of AVs in improving road safety, mobility, and environmental outcomes, the City aimed to assess AV capabilities and interactions in real-world scenarios. The public trial played a crucial role in raising awareness and understanding amongst the local community about this emerging technology.

The trial was conducted in a predetermined suburb within a multimodal transport system and diverse urban environment. The objectives of the trial were threefold:

  • To understand how AV technology and shuttle services could complement existing public transport and support major events by providing first mile/last mile connectivity.
  • To identify changes in engineering and road design practices necessary for the seamless integration of fully autonomous and driverless vehicles.
  • To gauge sentiment of the Gold Coast community and passengers regarding the safety, convenience, and importance of AV technology in the future transport system.

At the conclusion of the Gold Coast Smart Shuttle trial, it was deemed successful having examined the coexistence of autonomous vehicles with traditional road users, aligning with the city's future transport strategy. It assessed AV capabilities, integration with public transport, and garnered community feedback, shedding light on the potential of AVs for safer, more sustainable urban mobility.
