Asset AI® is a trial that has the potential to be a local council resource to assist all levels of government to have an overview of the condition of roads in near real time and streamline road maintenance tasks. By bringing together asset and pavement defect information from across NSW it is anticipated Asset AI® will learn to recognise the triggers for road asset defects and schedule preventative maintenance work before there is a risk to the community.
There are two main components to Asset AI®
1. Development of a software platform;
2. Technology (camera and sensor) trials to capture data, to feed into the platform.
The 128 LGAs in NSW oversee 85% of the state's 180,000 km road network. Severe weather events further exacerbate road surface deterioration, often going unnoticed, especially on unsealed roads. Transport for NSW in partnership with IPWEA Roads and Transport Directorate, and City of Canterbury Bankstown engaged Deloitte to develop the software platform for Asset AI®, to supporting councils in road defect management and repair.
Asset AI® has the potential to provide near real-time insights to NSW government, streamlining road maintenance by equipping council vehicles with sensors and cameras to swiftly identify damaged road assets, enhancing early detection. Asset AI® aims to revolutionise road maintenance by capturing, classifying and prioritising defects. The AI technology meticulously analyses data and logs defects into a comprehensive database and helps prevent issues like potholes. The application identifies repairs and guides maintenance teams to prioritise inspection. Currently, Asset AI® has consolidated over 70,000 defects into 10,000 prioritised tasks paving the way for more efficient management of NSW’s $87 billion local road network, ultimately improving its quality and safety.
Asset AI® has the potential to revolutionise road maintenance across all NSW LGAs subsequently nationwide, enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, safety, and community welfare.
