The impacts of COVID-19 are unprecedented and life has changed dramatically for most of us. While the desire to return to 'business as usual' isn't surprising, the current crisis could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make changes for the better; a chance to reset and rethink life priorities and daily activities.
The COVID-19 recovery period and the future new 'normal' pose many challenges for the government and, in particular, for the transport industry. Anticipating the change in travel demand patterns across the Greater Capital Cities, states, and the nation, and adapting infrastructure and transport services to accommodate those changes, will be an enormous task for transport agencies, operators, and infrastructure investors.
Existing transport models and baseline data will need to be recalibrated for the post-COVID-19 Australia. In doing so, the use of mobility data and strategies to influence behavioural change will be critical.
