Nerryl has over 30 years of experience in the Traffic Management Centre, traffic signals and airport electrical assets. That experience is hands-on involving traffic centre operations, freeway management systems, traffic signal contract management, traffic signal maintenance and repairs, airport electrical assets airside and landside and Electrical Trade qualifications. Whilst performing the crucial duties TMC officers perform daily, Nerryl also specialises in training the newer officers to the team and continues mentoring them well into their careers, passing on the wealth of knowledge he has accumulated in his time with Victoria's Department of Transport.
SCATS and STREAMS do not connect to the website directly. The website traffic information (Travel Times, Roadworks, Incident Reports and Accident Allocation) is obtained from other in house data sources.
Generally SCATS is used to manage the arterial road network through traffic signals and STREAMS is used for the management of our managed motorways.
Trimming or modifying traffic signals is undertaken directly through SCATS.
As TMC interventions are generally in response to alarms or public complaints, they are initiated and monitored until the issue has been resolved, either by a fault repair or traffic normalisation.
No. Each operator has a laptop to allow ease of emergency evacuation and recovery. Both monitors are connected through a Dell docking station to the Laptop. I use a separate keyboard and mouse.
They are both a quick visual source of traffic information. I prefer Tom Tom, I have also used WAZE and found that the users were great for identifying breakdowns and collisions but not sure on traffic.

1 Manager TMC /IRS, 1 Team Leader, 13 Traffic Control Operators, 6 Customer Service Operators, 1 Clear Way Towing Administrator, 1 Towing accreditation Administrator, 1 Media Manager and 3 Media Staff form part of the TMC operations.
The TMC uses 2 way Radio, mobile phone and SMS. Tablets are being set up for job allocation and feedback. The current systems are needed for IRS safety. Speaking directly always solves problems and provides support.
The Media team will push events to ABC RADIO, 3AW or any others that want the information. They have a Facebook page and place images of events on the page from time to time.
The DoT TMC is the first point of contact for road emergencies in Victoria. DoT Victoria employees engineers in all streams of engineering required for construction and maintenance of road assets.
