The world’s biggest transport technology event, the ITS World Congress kicks off in Dubai on Monday 16 September and runs for five days. Organised by ERTICO - ITS Europe and hosted by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), it promises to be an exciting week, hosted for the first time in the UAE.
As always, ITS Australia will spearhead a strong Australian contingent at the event, and for those of you heading to Dubai, or for those of you interested in our international engagement, we’ve put together this preview of our involvement, and the participation of many Australian companies. We've also scoured the full Dubai program to prepare a handy summary of the Australian speakers across the massive five-day agenda.
Through an ITS World Congress, we are proud to represent Australia’s ITS sector to a global audience, and importantly, showcase and advocate on behalf of our members. As always, we will host a pavilion in the World Congress Exhibition Hall – our base for formal and informal meetings with global colleagues and a central meeting point for any Australian representatives to use over the course of the week. We encourage attendees to drop by and visit us at Stand H7-F17-A. At our Pavilion, we will highlight our program of work across research, policy, industry development and events, as well as promote our members to more than 20,000 attendees.
ITS Australia also had a key role pre-Dubai as a member of International Planning Committee, advocating on behalf of our members and Australia’s ITS sector to secure speaking opportunities in the Congress program for Australian companies that are delivering world-leading ITS solutions.
Program highlights
In a packed five-day agenda, we’re excited to see a significant cohort of Australian companies represented, showcasing programs and technology that are enhancing ITS solutions. Featured below is a complete summary of Australian speakers in the Dubai program, but here are a few of our highlights:
- An ITS Australia curated Strategic Future Session ‘AI & Data for Transport System Management’ is a great way to start your Congress experience at 9am on day one, Monday 16 September. The international panel featuring Australian representatives will talk about the fundamental issues of traffic congestion, emission and transport safety and how AI and data create enormous opportunities to solve these issues once and for all.
- On Tuesday 17 September from 2.00pm – 3.30pm, CEO of HMI Technologies/Ohmio Automation Dean Zabrieszach and Compass IoT Co-founder Emily Bobis join the panel for a Special Interest Session, ‘Wheels in Motion: The Intersection of Connectivity and Transportation’ which will focus on the transformative role of connected vehicle data in enhancing transport networks and infrastructure, while discussing the challenges to implementation that must be considered to fully leverage the technology.
- Transurban’s Head of Strategy and Planning, Dr Yandong Fan will be a speaker in the plenary session ‘Accelerating Mobility Transition Towards Smarter and More Sustainable Cities’ on Thursday 19 September at 9.00am. The session will examine the role of ITS in delivering seamless, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation systems that optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, lower emissions, and enhance overall urban sustainability. Later that day, Dr Fan will join Australian-based colleagues from Transurban and SICE for the Special Interest Session, ‘Leading the integration of road tunnels in Asia-Pacific’ – a case study on Sydney’s WestConnex motorway, the now complete 26km of connected tunnels, managed from one location using SICE’s Operations Management & Control System SIDERA.
- On Thursday 18 September, don’t miss ITS Australia CEO Susan Harris presenting in the Special Interest Session ‘Global state of the art in mobility data exchange – Policy, key initiatives and best practices’ from 11.00am to 12.30pm; as well as our President Silje Troseth (in her capacity as Vice President Asia Pacific and General Manager Australia at Q-Free), who will join Host Session 3, ‘Driving Change: Government Policies, Sustainable Planning, and Future Fuels’ from 4 to 5.30pm.
- Finish your Congress experience by attending another ITS Australia curated Special Interest Session – ‘Cooperative ITS for safe and sustainable transport’ from 11.00am to 12.30pm on Friday 20 September. Featuring a range of speakers including ITS Australia Policy Manager Stacey Ryan, Global Lead of Program and Partnerships at the University of Melbourne Nichollas Collins, and Matthew McLeish, Executive Vice President and Managing Director Australia at Kapsch TrafficCom Australia, this session will examine how industry and governments in different countries are advocating for alignment between governments and industry to fully realise the benefits of C-ITS technology.
International engagement
Beyond the official program, the World Congress is an opportunity for important international engagement through a series of formal and informal activities – from bilateral meetings to networking functions.
Our engagement commences on Sunday, before the official start of Congress, where will participate in two important ITS association board meetings. At the ITS Asia Pacific Board of Directors meeting, which involves all eleven member associations from the region, we’ll hear a report on the 19th ITS Asia Pacific Forum in Jakarta earlier this year, and also review planning for the 20th AP Forum to be held in Suwon, Korea next year; as well as the 32nd ITS World Congress in Gangneung, Korea in 2026. The World Congress is held in the Asia-Pacific region every three years and later on Sunday, the Board will convene again to officially vote for the host city for the 2029 ITS World Congress. As you may be aware, ITS Australia is bidding to host the 2029 event in Brisbane. Also on the Sunday, our President Silje Troseth will represent ITS Australia at the ITS World Congress Board of Directors Meeting where Dubai organisers will preview this year’s event, and we will re-connect with our international peers.
On Tuesday 17 September, a strong Australian delegation will meet with American counterparts for a Bilateral Meeting with the American Association of State Highway Transport Officials. The meeting, which occurs regularly at World Congresses, is an opportunity for knowledge sharing and a roundtable discussion focussing on a significant policy topic. This year, the group will focus on connected and automated vehicle activity in our respected countries.
ITS Australia will also use the Dubai Congress to sign a number of important Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with ITS association counterparts from Korea, Malaysia and Ireland. The MoUs will strengthen the bilateral relationships between Australia and each country and support heightened cooperation on issues such as research, knowledge sharing and ongoing dialogue on important policy issues. Anyone attending the World Congress is welcome to attend the MoU signings, which will take place at the ITS Australia Pavilion (Stand H7-F17-A) in the Exhibition Hall at the following times:
- Tue 17 Sep, 1.00pm – 1.30pm: ITS Ireland
- Tue 17 Sep, 3.00pm – 3.30pm: ITS Korea
- Wed 18 Sep, 10.30am – 11.00am: ITS Malaysia
In addition to these official activities we look forward to several informal networking opportunities with visiting delegations from countries including Canada, the UK and Singapore and will host the official ITS Australia VIP Cocktail Reception, which will connect Australian attendees with counterparts from a broad range of international ITS associations.
