The future of transport will be shaped through collaboration that crosses borders. By sharing knowledge and experiences with our international counterparts, we not only accelerate innovation but also ensure that Australia remains aligned with global best practice. This spirit of partnership is essential to delivering safer, more sustainable, and more efficient transport systems for all.

Silje Troseth / President ITS Australia

The US Study Tour 2025 showcased Australia’s transport leaders exploring cutting-edge automated and connected vehicle developments in Texas and Georgia. Delegates observed how collaboration between industry, government, and first responders is driving real-world deployments of autonomous freight and digital infrastructure, with Texas focusing on long-haul AV trucking and Georgia boasting the largest connected vehicle rollout in North America.

Key innovations include safety-first automation, pragmatic regulatory frameworks, and ecosystem engagement, all vital for earning public trust, enabling efficient freight operations, and improving first responder readiness. The tour offered actionable lessons for Australia, highlighting the power of partnerships and harmonized standards for shaping sustainable, inclusive, and future-ready transport systems

ITS Australia was proud to lead the delegation of ITS Australia members to join colleagues in Texas and Georgia Departments of Transportation and enjoy behind-the-scenes tours of transport technology companies leading the heavy vehicle automation sector.

This study tour could not have happened, or been as successful, without the full support of our US hosts at both the Texas and Georgia Departments of Transportation. Over many months of planning and logistics and with generous introductions to leaders in automated vehicles in their jurisdictions we are in their debt and extremely grateful for the time and hospitality they have offered us.

We will continue collaborating and sharing and building on the important relationships created during this study tour and at the ITS World Congress in Atlanta Georgia with the theme framed around “Deploying Today, Empowering Tomorrow”, the Congress emphasised translating innovation into real-world impact with intelligent transportation technologies.
A record-breaking program featuring nearly 600 speakers, over 175 conference sessions, hundreds of exhibitors, and a global audience of ITS practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders.
Australia was well represented from industry with a large number of presentations in the International Forums, Special Interest Sessions and primary program.
