Transurban embarked on an ambitious plan to consolidate its South East Queensland (SEQ) toll road operations from four geographically dispersed traffic control room facilities with their own alternate control rooms, each running independent and non-integrated technology systems, into a single consolidated facility, with enhanced disaster recovery and resilience features, using a unified technology stack to operate a fully integrated toll road network.

This project refreshed significant portions of the technology stack associated with centralised command and control of toll road operations, but included a new and enhanced feature set, informed by Transurban’s deep experience in road operations, to revolutionise Transurban’s concept of operations in Queensland.

The $80M, 5year project, encompassed major technology, building, architectural, organisational and legal workstreams. The project was delivered in a brownfield environment, with care taken to limit impacts on 24/7 operations. The global delivery was 24hours with Transurban and Indra staff in Brisbane and Madrid working together to deliver objectives, with minimal impact on the transport network.

Transurban worked closely with Emergency Services and connecting transport networks, to ensure our new operations were seamlessly coordinated with adjacent and overlapping agencies, for a one network approach to management of the SEQ traffic network.

With the project complete, Transurban has realised its objective of efficient and scalable operations, with a modern technology stack and technology roadmap with significant investment planned to continually enhance toll road operations for the benefits of customers and broader network.

This was a first for Transurban and arguably Australia to take on a project of this ITS complexity and scale in a brownfield environment and successfully deliver full scope, on time and budget. Transurban Queensland now operates one of the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art Network Traffic Control Rooms and Operations Centres, with world class ITS technologies ready to take on C-ITS, CAV and V2I advancements.
