ITS Australia recognises member leadership in road safety innovation during Australia’s National Road Safety Week

Melbourne, Australia – 13 May 2026: As Australia marks National Road Safety Week between 17-24 May, ITS Australia is recognising the critical role its members play in improving road safety outcomes through technology, research, infrastructure innovation and intelligent transport systems.

Across Australia and globally, ITS Australia members are delivering advanced safety technologies and transport solutions designed to reduce road trauma, improve incident response and support safer journeys for all road users.

ITS Australia Chief Executive Officer Susan Harris said the intelligent transport sector continues to drive major improvements in how roads are planned, managed and operated, with the ultimate focus on delivering improved safety for communities nationwide.

“National Road Safety Week is an important opportunity to recognise the organisations and individuals working every day to reduce road trauma and create safer transport networks,” Ms Harris said.

“Many of our members are leading the development of technologies that help prevent crashes before they occur, improve emergency response times, manage congestion more safely and provide road operators with better real-time information.”

“From connected vehicle technology and smart intersections to fatigue monitoring systems and advanced traffic management platforms, intelligent transport systems are playing an increasingly important role in improving road safety outcomes across Australia.”

ITS Australia members are contributing to road safety improvements in a range of ways, including:

  • Advanced traffic modelling and simulation tools from companies that help transport agencies identify high-risk locations, improve traffic flow and design safer road networks.
  • Smart intersection technologies, connected vehicle systems and adaptive traffic signals to improve safety at intersections and reduce conflicts between vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Road enforcement and traffic management systems delivered that support safer driving behaviour through speed management, red-light enforcement and smarter motorway operations.
  • Fatigue and driver distraction detection technologies, telematics and behavioural analytics solutions helping improve fleet and heavy vehicle safety.
  • Real-time motorway management and incident response platforms intelligent transport infrastructure systems that assist transport operators in responding faster and more effectively to incidents on the road network.
  • Connected and automated vehicle research being undertaken by organisations alongside leading universities and research institutions
  • Road weather intelligence and network monitoring technologies that help road operators make safer operational decisions during changing traffic and weather conditions.

“Safer roads across Australia are the result of strong and sustained collaboration between government and industry.”, said Ms Harris.

“By our members working in close partnership, combining leadership, innovation and technical expertise, both sectors are focused on reducing road trauma and preventing incidents before they occur. These enduring partnerships are essential to driving the development of smarter, safer transport systems and delivering meaningful improvements in road safety outcomes for all Australians.”

National Road Safety Week encourages all Australians to remember those who have lost their lives on Australian roads and recommit to safer behaviour behind the wheel and across the transport network.
