Keolis Downer (operator of Yarra Trams) has collaborated with HOVE to implement the data visualisation platform, Patterns. Developed through the creation of a patronage model that employs a high quantity of anonymised GPS phone traces, Yarra Trams has developed this platform to visualise and analyse patronage for the Melbourne tram network.
Patterns is based on mobile GPS data collected by Hove’s partner location data suppliers through software development kits (SDK) integrated into mobile applications. Through the collection and analysis of GPS traces, the platform makes it possible to reconstruct origin-destination matrices, modal shares and measure the attractiveness of points of interests.
Patterns brings together innovative solutions for the processing of mobile GPS data and reconstructing origin-destination matrices. It offers unique features that other automatically collected patronage data sources lack, such as insights into origin-destinations, multi-modal travel behaviour and the attractiveness of points of interest.
Patterns provides critical information to help improve knowledge of multimodal travel habits, allowing Yarra Trams to identify areas of high demand; monitor changes in travel demand; analyse impacts of different events and understand how passengers travel to and from tram stops. This better understanding of patronage has enabled Yarra Trams to accommodate variability in passenger demand and deliver efficient services to our passengers, through alleviating congestion at busy tram stops and providing more efficient services planned around real demand, improving public safety.
Patterns provides a richer understanding of tram patronage, trends, and end to end passenger trip details, allowing significantly improved planning decisions and improved services.
